Social Networking

Social Networking websites are becoming tremendously popular!  You have no doubt heard of Facebook and Twitter, but there is also Digg, HubSpot, Flickr, and more.  These sites all have the goal of helping people communicate.  Almost all of these sites are free to join, so take a look at the below summary and join the crowd!  I will try and update this page with the hundreds of other sites as I become familiar with them.

Facebook

Facebook

Facebook – With upwards of 500 million members, this is one of the most popular Social Networking websites.  You can keep in contact with people on your Friends list by posting updates, photos, or links.  You can even post events and invite your friends.  This is easy to setup, just be sure to pay attention to the privacy settings.

Twitter

Twitter

Twitter – Tweets (messages limited to 140 characters) broadcast out to your “followers”.  These Tweets can be as mundane as what someone had for breakfast, to what is happening in the news.   You can Tweet by sending a test on your cell phone or by logging into the site.  You can watch topics listed under Trends on your homepage to see what people are talking about at anytime.  If you are a sports lover, you can follow a sports celebrity and read their Tweets each day.  For business owners you can send out news, promotion or events.

As with Facebook, be sure and read through the privacy sittings.  Also, the location-based feature is off by default, if you turn it on your followers will know where you are if you post updates using a smart phone.

Blogging

Blogging

Blogging – Think an online diary or the chance to be an author with the chance of millions of people reading your advice, thought, or story.  There are blogs for every subject imaginable!  Cooking, politics, business, dance, art, and more.  I follow several blogs and one is just an average mom dealing with the struggles of raising her children.  Many times, after I finish a great book, I find the author has their own blog where I can find more information or information on a new book.  Most blogger sites are free, like Wordpress and Blogger.
